Qxtender - User Guide - QB Integrated App Mode access to QuickBooks Data
When Qxtender is started, the Set Data Mode dialog is displayed. Select "QB Integrated Application Mode" and click "OK."
Or choose "Set Data Mode..." from the File menu, or click the "Set Data Mode" button on Qxtender's toolbar to open this dialog.
Note: QB Integrated App Mode should be used in most cases. It is the preferred data mode.
QB App Controller Mode can be used for QuickBooks versions QB 2006-2023 and Enterprise 6.0-23.0.
QB Direct File Mode is no longer available (It supported data files from QB version 2005 and earlier, and Enterprise version 5 and earlier.)

The company data file must be open in QuickBooks
The QB Integrated App Data Mode requires that QuickBooks be running. If not, this message will appear.
|
Getting QuickBooks ready
Open your data file in QuickBooks and login as Admin. Close any message windows that appear at startup.
Although it is not absolutely necessary, you should close all of QB's internal windows by selecting "Close All" on the Window menu.
|
Qxtender initializes a connection to QuickBooks
Qxtender initializes a connection to the QuickBooks application, retrieves version information and company data.
The first time you connect to a company file, QuickBooks will display an authorization dialog (similar to the one shown here). It is recommended that you choose the "Yes, Always" or "Yes, whenever this..." option, which will allow Qxtender to connect to the company file in the future without the authorization dialog being displayed.
|
If you get an error message regarding permissions, see Resolving Access Denied Errors.
Initialization complete
When the connection has been initialized, a message box will open noting:
- Name of the company data file and version of QB.
- Direct Mode license information.
- If a Direct Mode upgrade is required, there will be additional instructions on how to do so.
|
The name of the company will appear on the Title Bar of Qxtender (above the menus). The current Data Mode and QB version is also indicated.
All Plugins that support the QB Integrated App Data Mode now have access to the data of the currently loaded company.
|
Notes on QB Integrated Application Mode
When the connection has been initialized, a message box will open noting:
- The QuickBooks SDK currently only allows access to payroll data with an active (not expired) payroll subscription. This includes the one-time payroll update available with new QB purchases. This is Intuit's current policy, which may change in the future. The other data modes are not subject to this limitation.
- Certain payroll item information is not accessible via the SDK such as Tax Tracking, etc. When using QB Integrated App mode, payroll Plugins use the QB calculated "income subject to tax" amount for UI subject wages.
|
Resolving Access Denied Errors
This message (or a similar one) will appear when attempting to initialize QB Integrated App Data Mode, under the following circumstances:
- All Integrated Applications are denied access in QuickBooks' preferences.
- Qxtender is listed as an Integrated Application in QuickBooks' preferences, but is not allowed access.
|
To correct the above problem:
- Launch QuickBooks.
- Select Preferences... from QB's Edit menu to open the Preferences dialog.
- Select the Integrated Applications item from the list on the left.
- Select the Company Preferences tab.
- Ensure the option "Don't allow any applications to access this company file" is NOT checked.
- If "Qxtender" is listed as an application, ensure there is a check next to it in the "Allow Access" column.
- Click OK and retry connecting from Qxtender.
